History: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, was established in 1982. The organization began as a promise between Nancy G. Brinker and her sister Susan G. Komen who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Komen has invested nearly $1 billion in breast cancer research and community outreach programs, becoming one of the world's largest sources of funds fighting breast cancer.
Founded in 1997, Komen San Antonio has raised and invested more than $8 million. Seventy-five percent has funded local breast cancer programs that provide vital services to the medically under-served of our community. The remaining twenty-five percent supports international breast cancer research through the Komen Award and Research Grant Program which supports groundbreaking breast cancer research and scientific programs around the world.
Komen San Antonio serves as a resource for those seeking opportunites for screening and treatment, and we endeavor to raise awarness and educate the community about the benefits of early detection in the fight to end breast cancer. 2007-2008 Funding: Komen runs one of the most responsive grant programs in breast cancer today. Komen San Antonio Affiliate contributed $1.2 million for community-based breast cancer screening, treatment and education projects in Bexar County.
Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure: Race day remembers lives lost to breat cancer, celebrates thos wo are surviving the battle and honors familes and friends for their support. The 11th annual Race was held March 29, 2008, attracted more than 28,000 participants, including 1,400 survivors, and for the fifth consecutive year, raised more than $1 million for the continued fight to end breast cancer.
The 12th annual Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure is scheduled Saturday, April 4, 2009.
